is there a charge for the consultation?
No, there is no charge for a consultation. An hour is generally ample time to
discuss flavor, design, and other intricate details of your cake. Often, multiple
meetings are arranged on the same day, so please arrive on time to be
guaranteed your full time. We also ask that if a cancellation is required,
please give as much notice as possible-48 hours is preferable.
what do i need to bring to the appointment?
Any decisions you have made all ready, be it location, color palette, or flower
choice is helpful with regard to the design of the cake. Though we prefer not
to copy cakes, bringing pictures of things that you like for inspiration is
certainly encouraged: from your dress, to a monogram, the invitations to your
wedding...anything under the sun can be translated into your ideal design. Of
course, coming with nothing but your warm body is fine as well; the Cake Diva
has seemingly endless pictures to look through for inspiration, and is always
ready to come up with a creative idea.
what can i expect to pay?
Currently, our average price for cakes of any occasion is $5-6 a serving. In the
end, the final price of the cake will be dictated by design, flavor, serving
number, and distance. Having a budget in mind when you arrive at the
meeting can certainly help give us a better idea of what we can design for
you.
do you work with budgets?
Of course! The Cake Diva strives to work with the budget of each and every
individual customer. Unfortunately, while the price of gas has come down in
recent months, the price of milk, butter, and eggs have not. Regardless, we
always do our best to work with each and every bride to get her dream
wedding cake.
are all your cakes fondant?
No! Far from it, actually. The majority of the cakes you will see depicted on this
website and in consultation with the Cake Diva are genuine buttercream,
iced to a smooth finish. If you do see fondant, it is mainly out of necessity, or to
achieve the look you're going for. Regardless, fondant is certainly an option to
consider in the final design of your cake.
how far in advance should i order my cake?
As soon as possible! The Cake Diva is already receiving calls for 2010 and
2011--there is no time like the present. As soon as you know your date, call us.
While we do attempt to accommodate orders with less than adequate
timing, sometimes it is simply not possible. Don't wait!
how far will you travel with cake?
The Cake Diva is willing to go within four to five hours, in any direction, of the
Jackson Metro area. Locations beyond that are, of course, negotiable upon
request.
how much does a three-tiered wedding cake serve?
This is, perhaps, our most frequently asked question; and, unfortunately-it's just
not that simple. Due to differing pan sizes and the like, a three-tiered wedding
cake may serve as few as 75 or as many as 300. Each cake is custom made to
order: that includes flavor, design, AND serving size.
how much does a three-tiered wedding cake cost?
The same answer as above applies here. Due to varying pan sizes and other
elements, such as flavor, design, and distance of delivery, the cake price will
vary. Photographs do not always accurately represent the cake itself as far as
size, and may be misleading.
do you ship your cakes?
No, the Cake Diva cakes are not shipping-company friendly. There is nothing
more horrifying to us than the idea of you opening a box and receiving a
less-than-satisfying creation, mangled by your local delivery process. As a
result, we choose not to ship our cakes.
do you offer tastings?
Cake tastings are available, by appointment only. The flavors available at
such an appointment are dependent totally on what the Cake Diva is baking
that week, and may vary from appointment to appointment.
can cakes be presented outdoors?
Cakes placed outdoors or in non-temperature controlled venues are not
guaranteed due to natural conditions beyond our control; i.e. temperature,
critters, wind, and rain. While we will set up a cake outside in what we hope
are the best of conditions, we would not recommend it.
do you do fake cakes?
The cost of making a fake cake versus a real cake is almost congruent, and
the labor involved is equal. So, in all actuality, you would be paying the same
price for a fake cake AND the additional cakes to cut. So, while we are
capable of creating your dream cake out of styrofoam, it's not as cost-efficient
as many believe.
what about cupcakes?
Cupcakes have, lately, resurfaced as a common trend in wedding cake
culture; for all the wrong reasons. Venues push them because it saves them
labor, but at the price of the loss of the "WOW!" moment when your guests
walk into your wedding and see a beautiful, individual cake. Since cupcakes
have no filling, you can get trapped into the same boring flavors, and you rob
your guests of their favorite photo opportunity. While cupcakes are possible,
they are no more cost-efficient than cake, because people tend to eat more
than one and you must up the number of servings you provide.
can i order individual cakes as centerpieces?
Yes. But, individual cakes tend to have many of the same problems as
cupcakes; for one, your guests are deprived of that breathtaking view of the
cake as they walk into the wedding. For another, once the centerpiece is
devoured, it leaves nothing for the photos. And, perhaps, the most important
thing-individual cakes are hardly cost-efficient. The labor and ingredient list is
higher, therefore, these centerpieces will cost much more than a single
wedding cake. While this is a cute idea for birthday parties or other event, at
weddings with a high guest count, it can become an issue. If this is ultimately
what you want, we will be happy to cater to you.
